Let's Enjoy the Coast Together! |
| | GOLF NEWS | |
Greetings members, we hope you’re all doing well. It’s a very exciting time of year, as we enter Spring, which is especially beautiful at Bodega Harbour. Of course, we hope you’re enjoying the golf course and all the amenities but are also able to take-in our flora & fauna, and the best sunrises and sunsets on the west coast, or anywhere, for that matter!
Below are some important announcements regarding our daily operations for March! | SUPERINTENDENT NEWS Weather-permitting, we plan to aerate the greens with the smaller ¼” tines on Monday, March 20th & Tuesday, March 21st. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, our alternate dates will be April 10th & 11th. During aeration, members can play the same 9-hole twice, but be sure to let the golf shop staff know when booking so we can reserve a turn-time on the same 9 holes approx. 2 hrs. and 20 minutes after you start. This will only apply to 3/20 & 3/21, and you’ll be able to play a continuous 18 holes beginning March 22nd! The greens will take approximately 10-14 days to heal and return to normal with the cooperation of the weather.
As weather improves and the course conditions allow, we’ll continue aerating the fairways! We’ve completed 6 so far and look forward to continuing this important task.

ST PADDY’S DAY GOLF AND WEEKEND SALE, 3/17-3-19 St. Paddy's Day Golf Special, Fri 3/17: Green fees, golf car, sleeve of 3 themed Pro V1 golf balls (while supplies last) & corned beef lunch special for $99, per person. We'll also be having closest to the hole and best-dressed contests!
St. Paddy's Day Merchandise Sale, Fri 3/17 - Sun 3/19, Save between 25-40% off select attire in our award-winning golf shop.
PACE TECHNOLOGY & SNACK BAR ORDERING:
We are in the process of uploading our snack bar menu to our gps tablets, which should be up and running by mid-month. We’ve also acquired a printer that communicates with the gps tablets, which will print orders directly to our snack bar during hours of operation, currently 7:30 am – 3:00 pm (weather-permitting).
We’re also pleased to utilize PACE geo-fencing technology which helps us track and monitor golf cars and pace of play. This is continually monitored and updated daily, depending on course conditions. If a golf car enters an area that is restricted, it will alert the driver with an audible tone, and direct them backwards until they are within the allowable areas. If the driver ignores the alert and persists, the golf car will not move forward. This will help preserve course conditions. See below for a screenshot of our PACE display at our golf shop!

Glad to relay this event from last week…One of our guests visiting from out of the area, lost his wallet somewhere on the front 9, and was understandably distraught. The wallet hadn’t been turned in by anyone throughout the day, and it wasn’t looking too promising. He called our golf shop two days later, asking if anyone turned it in, and they hadn’t…
Thanks to the trail feature of PACE GPS, we were able to select the gentleman’s golf car, and access the trail path for his round. While marshalling that morning, we followed the gps trail and located the wallet, on Hole #2, left of the fairway!! Thankfully, it was untouched by anyone or our mowers, with his cash and credit cards intact!

| | LITERATURE GROUP |
|
---|
| At our next meeting, on Monday March 6th, Maurine Harkness will lead our discussion of Fredrik Backman’s Anxious People.
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove comes a charming, poignant novel about a crime that never took place, a would-be bank robber who disappears into thin air, and eight extremely anxious strangers who find they have more in common than they ever imagined.
Looking at real estate isn't usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can't fix their own marriage. |
|
---|
There's a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can't seem to agree on anything, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face, a flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment's only bathroom, and you've got the worst group of hostages in the world.
Rich with Fredrik Backman's "pitch-perfect dialogue and an unparalleled understanding of human nature" (Shelf Awareness), Anxious People is an ingeniously constructed story about the enduring power of friendship, forgiveness, and hope--the things that save us, even in the most anxious times.

| Next Month: On April 3rd: John Rymer will lead our discussion of Selected Stories of Anton Chekhov, translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.
Atmospheric, compassionate, and uncannily wise, Chekhov's short fiction possesses the transcendent power of art to awe and change the reader. This monumental edition, expertly translated, is especially faithful to the meaning of Chekhov's prose and the unique rhythms of his writing, giving readers an authentic sense of his style-and, in doing so, a true understanding of his greatness.
Called the greatest of short story writer, Anton Chekhov changed the genre itself with his spare, impressionistic depictions of Russian life and the human condition. Now, thirty of his best tales from—

—the major periods of his creative life are available in this outstanding one volume edition. Included are Chekhov's characteristically brief, evocative early pieces such as "The Huntsman" from 1885, which brilliantly conveys the complex texture of two lives during a meeting on a summer's day.
Four years later, Chekhov produced the tour de force "A Boring Story" (1889), the penetrating and caustic self-analysis of a dying professor of medicine. Dark irony, social commentary, and symbolism mark the stories that follow, particularly "Ward No. 6" (1892), where the tables turn on the director of a mental hospital and make him an inmate. Here, too, is one of Chekhov's best -known stories. "The Lady with the Little Dog" (1899), a look at illicit love, as well as his own favorite among his stories, "The Student," a moving piece about the importance of religious tradition.

| | VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES | HELP KEEP BODEGA BAY LOOKING GREAT! | A small and dedicated group of folk have regularly cleaned up the stretch of Hwy 1 south-east of old town for many years.
You may have seen the "Adopt A Highway" signs showing "Bodega Harbour Sea Gals" as responsible for a 2-mile stretch of the highway.
We now need a few more folk for this important work. The work is cleaning up a small part of the 2 mile stretch, typically takes about an hour and a half for a 2-person team. and happens at most 6 times a year.
Of course not everyone can be available on any given date, so it is not expected that every volunteer will be available for each event.
Cleanups are done on a quiet weekday when traffic is light. All equipment is supplied by Caltrans. Safety is the highest priority.
No need at all to be a Sea Gals member. The cleanup group has evolved to be independent of the Sea Gals group.
Doing the cleanup can be a fun outing, and it gives you a new perspective on Bodega Bay. Passing folk generally appreciate that this work is being done.

| LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT | Spring always ushers in an era of change. Almost three years ago now, in March of 2020, the Board of Bodega Harbour, like most of the world at that point, went from having in-person meetings to going fully remote.
Now, the Board of Directors has a unique opportunity to offer hybrid meetings, our first one being at the board meeting this month on March 18, 2023. Hybrid meetings will allow both in-person and remote attendance.
After extensive research done by the Bodega Harbour Admin office and Jennie Alexich and Kate Hecht from the board, we have made a purchase of hybrid meeting equipment we believe will suit us for the time being. Including:
- The Meeting Owl
- 2 40" Smart TVs & stands
- 4 Microphones
- Microphone Stands
- A PA System
We realize it may take a few tries before we become fully comfortable running hybrid meetings, but we're excited to move forward and learn together.
If you'd like to attend the upcoming open session board meeting in-person, we will be meeting in the Bodega Harbour Clubhouse at the bistro level on March 18, 2023 at 9AM.
| | | DESIGN REVIEW | PROJECT REVIEW & SECURITY DEPOSIT REIMBURSEMENT REMINDER
Once your design project is approved and completed, please contact Mary Angelo in the administration office to request an inspection.
Once the inspection has been completed and passed, a request will be submitted to Accounting for the security deposit reimbursement.
If you have any questions or need more assistance with this process, reach out to Mary Angelo in the Administration office at mangelo@kempersports.com or (707) 875-3519 ext. 210. | | | | LANDSCAPE REVIEW | APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS PREPARING FOR SPRING GARDENING | | | Spring is once again on the way here on the Coast. Let’s get ready for a beautiful season. Time to clean the flower beds. Check on garden mulch. If winter frost has exposed plant crowns temperatures remain cold, mulch should stay in place or be supplemented. On the other hand, if spring is early, you should remove enough mulch to let your perennials and spring bulb growth push up out of the ground unimpeded.
If you do not have one, start a garden journal. It is the best tool for systematically improving your garden over the years.
A little tip, don’t walk across your garden when the soil is wet. Treading all over it can lead to compaction which can impede root penetration and cause poor drainage.
Now is the time to fertilize your trees & shrubs, especially camellias and other broadleaf evergreens. Fertilize your rose bushes, including a handful of Epsom salt.
For fun, March is time to plant your summer-blooming bulbs & herbs, such as anemones to dahlias, gladiolus to ranunculus. When planting most bulbs, corms, and tubers dig a hole 2 or 3 times as deep as the bulb height. For dahlias, dig a hold roughly 6 inches deep. Though bulbs can survive in very lean (nutrient-deprived soil) they flower best in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. When planting, mix in compost and bulb fertilizer & water well. You can typically wait to do supplemental watering until foliage emerges and flower buds start developing.
Now is the time to visit the San Francisco Botanical Garden, which will be filled with blooms in the spring from February through April. The show starts with their large collection of magnolias. The magnolia collection includes more than 200 trees, representing 63 species and 49 cultivars, typically from late February to early March. There are many other flowers blooming through March as well — from rhododendrons to California natives.
Just some quick reminders:
1. Trees, shrubs, & plants must be trimmed that no portion grows over lot lines, over sidewalks, or where sidewalks do not exist, over the edge of the curb into the street. Just make sure you’re trimming your garden, so our neighbors can walk safely.
The landscaping committee will be hitting the pavement soon to look for overgrown gardens, impeding walk ways, dead and dying plants, and making sure our local gardens are maintained.
2. When submitting new plans for your garden, be sure to submit samples of mulch, stone, and gravel. This will save you time! Our goal is to have the landscaping blend.
3. If you wish to submit plans for new landscaping, including water system e.g. drip, paths, plants, mulch & more; or, you wish to submit a written complaint, we ask that requests be submitted two weeks prior to the Landscaping Committee monthly meeting, which meets on the second Monday of the month.
4. A simple request: if it’s raining, please turn off your water system.
5. If you have a birdbath in your garden, be sure to check and change daily. Some of these cold mornings the baths have turned to ice.
6. Start thinking now if you wish to submit your garden for the Spring Garden Contest or your neighbors. It would be wonderful to have lots of contestants. We typically vote in May, and share the winners in June.
| | | | Helpful Hint: if you’ve received a letter from the HOA for view obstruction or garden maintenance, and you’ve trimmed your tree, or removed dead and dying plants. As a courtesy please call Mary Angelo in the Bodega Harbour Office at 707-377-4603 or email Mary at mangelo@kempersports.com.
We do our best to keep an eye on the parcels, to remove them from current view obstructions or garden maintenance list. Your phone call or email will be appreciated! Just one more way that we can all communicate with each other.
| | Enjoy your garden, and let us know if you would like to be on the Landscaping Committee. Please reach out to Mary Angelo in the office either by phone or email. We would love to have you.
We meet the second Monday of the month @ 10 a.m. either by zoom or in person, varies month to month.
